Rays of Hope for Haiti’s Action Plan

Below is a list of specific needs and actions associated with the current food crisis in Haiti. This list is presented as an aid to assist with developing a family or group project. However, the Holy Spirit might be leading you to do something “off the list.” What a wonderful blessing this is too! We welcome and thank you for all your prayers and support during this critical time. May you, your family, friends, and Church be encouraged as we work together in this mission for our brothers and sisters in Haiti.

God bless and encourage you always.

Pray for the people of Haiti.  Especially those who lead others in their spiritual direction. This crisis has been devastating within the Church, and many clergy are worn from the constant need of hunger they face everyday. All that I have spoke to are completely out of resources to meet the immediate need.

Financial gift to Rays of Hope for Haiti to assist with the immediate need. In order to purchase food (in Haiti). This is necessary because the crisis is immediate. These communities, many centered around a Parish or church, are facing death and disease daily. Those leading the faith communities are worn and need our physical support too!

Plan for the Haiti Sea Container. As mentioned the cost of a sea container to Haiti is expensive, and ever rising because of the cost of fuel, but Rays of Hope for Haiti has been in this specific ministry for ten years. We have the knowledge and ability to effectively transport relief supplies to Haiti at this critical time. However we lack the funds and the food. Here are some ideas:

The P.A.I.L. Project– We have empty 5 gallon buckets in our warehouse waiting to be filled with food supplies for Haitian families. Each bucket (donated by local businesses) costs us $10 to ship to Haiti. Can you help us to fill these buckets and ship them to Haiti. We can provide you with the buckets. They need to be rinsed out before use. Then they are ready to be filled with food items! Most commonly used food items include dry beans, rice, canned meat, canned tomatoes, canned milk, and cooking or vegetable oil. Please feel free to include a short note or card in the bucket to help make it personal.

Download the full brochure below!

Bag and a Buck– The donation of a bag of rice (or beans) and one dollar for each bag has a tremendous impact for communities in Haiti. This works well for church or group events, as the donations are brought and presented on a predetermined day as a show of unity with the poor in Haiti. Rays of Hope for Haiti would be happy to help work with you in order to share this outreach opportunity with your organization or church.

Travel with us to Haiti– We will be putting together teams to help with the medical needs and housing needs of Haitians after the devasting earthquake. Please email Kim at ksorrelle@gmail.com if you are interested in receiving information as it becomes available.

Blare's Bears for Haiti

One young boys project to help the children of Haiti becomes a statewide outreach of love and hope!

A newscast showing Haitian kids roaming over rubble looking searching for their parents in the aftermath of Monday's earthquake left Blare Gooch wishing he could give those kids a hug.
The St. Thomas the Apostle School seventh-grader resolved to do the next best thing: organize a teddy bear drive to give kids in Haiti something to hug.

"I put it on my Facebook page and a teacher let me announce it on the PA at school," said Blare, a 12-year-old who is 25 percent Haitian and dreams of competing on Haiti's national soccer team. "Several kids came up to me afterward to say they wanted to donate teddy bears, so I think it's going to be successful."

Blare started the drive Thursday by donating the big white teddy bear his father, Johrone Gooch, gave him on his first Valentine's Day. He's also contributing Brown Bear, his bedtime companion that made at Build-A-Bear Workshop when he was three. She and Johrone also purchased a new green bear to donate.

Teddy Bears, and monetary donations to ship them, can be dropped off before March 15 at St. Thomas the Apostle School, 1429 Wilcox Park Drive SE, and at Lisa Gooch's business, Hair Force, 1557 Michigan Ave. NE.

Gooch is arranging to ship and donate the bears through a Rays of Hope for Haiti, but not until the crush of basic needs for food, shelter and medicine subsides.
Blare's goal is to collect 2,000 bears that will have to serve as tokens of comfort and love.

After the bears ship, Lisa Gooch said she will take Blare back to Build-A-Bear Workshop to create a bear to commemorate his compassion.

"I know that one day, a long time from now, I will see that bear in his office," she said.

Please donate a teddy bear to Blare's Bears for Haiti.  Donations are accepted at Rays of Hope for Haiti's warehouse address at 446 Grandville Ave SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503

Please help us get these bears to the children in hospitals and orphanages in Haiti.  All financial donations are tax deductible.
