Urgent appeal for assistance from local Grand Rapids based nonprofit organization working in Haiti

Rays of Hope for Haiti, a Grand Rapids based nonprofit organization with experience in shipping humanitarian aid and relief supplies to Haiti for the past ten years is sending out an urgent request for immediate assistance for the people of Haiti.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI. JANUARY 14, 2010 Rays of Hope for Haiti has several programs promoting education, medical assistance, and children’s orphanages and feeding programs in Haiti. Through the sea container project we have also developed a friendship with numerous nonprofits working in Haiti who share our vision of bringing direct aid and sustainable change to the people of Haiti.

In this time of crisis, Rays of Hope for Haiti needs your help. The disaster is overwhelming and any gift of material supplies and financial assistance is so greatly appreciated.  All of our programs in the Port au Prince area have been devastated. In addition, we have confirmed reports of one of our orphanages collapsing with fatalities being among the young children. First we urgently ask you to pray with us for our families in Haiti.  In addition we need to get immediate assistance to help our children and so many in the surrounding areas that have been impacted by this devastating earthquake.

Our financial needs include funds to facilitate shipping of relief supplies to Haiti in the immediate as this will be a long term effort to help rebuild after the immediate need is over. We also have need to help get medical attention to the children hurt by the collapse of their home and to find them alternative places to stay.

8000 Toothbrushes plus so much more!

Why we love Tommy and Brook!
Our thanks to Star 105.7 and Tommy and Brook for their weekend campaign to collect toothbrushes for the people of Haiti. In conjunction with Celebration Cinemas, Tommy and Brook collected over 8000 toothbrushes which will be included in personal hygiene care packages for the people of Haiti.
Thank you so much Tommy and Brook and our friends at Celebration Cinema for being the hands to help and a heart of love for the people of Haiti!
One week after the collection Rays of Hope for Haiti received a telephone call from a dentist in Los Angeles who said that they “Googled” the word “toothbrush, Help Haiti” and this took them right to Tommy and Brook’s website! The dentist said that they would be sending Rays of Hope for Haiti an additional 8000 toothbrushes as well!
Special Note:

Inspired by listening to 105.7, Ryan Sprague, a 6th grader at St. Charles Catholic School in Greenville, MI started his own toothbrush campaign at his church and school. Ryan collected over 500 toothbrushes and toothpaste for the people of Haiti. Ryan is stopping by our warehouse on Friday, February 5, 2010 to drop off the toothbrushes! Below is a copy of the flyer he sent out to everyone!

Thank you Ryan!

La Poderosa 640 AM Food for Haiti Campaign

Unbelievable! That was the words from Board Member Tonnie Carter on a cold Friday night, January 29th when pickup truck after pickup truck came rolling into the warehouse location at 446 Grandville Ave SE at about 7:15 PM. Radio Station, La Poderosa (640AM) held a one day food drive at cosponsored by Tacos El Cunado.
La Poderosa had collected over four thousand pounds of canned food, rice, beans, water, personal hygiene items and other supplies to be sent to Haiti. As Tonnie Carter, Board Member for Rays of Hope for Haiti said, “it was cold out, but the love from La Poderosa Radio Station sure warmed my heart!”
El Rey les responderá: "Les aseguro que todo lo que hicieron por uno de mis hermanos, aun por el más pequeño, lo hicieron por mí." Mateo 25:40
Wa a va reponn yo: Sa m'ap di nou la a, se vre wi: chak fwa nou te fè sa pou yonn nan pi piti pami frè m' yo, se pou mwen nou te fè li. Matye 25:40
"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' Matthew 25:40

Rays of Hope for Haiti delivers supplies to Matthew 25 House

The Matthew 25 House is located near Delmas 33 area of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and was established to be a Guest House for people visiting Haiti on a mission’s trip or in the country for other humanitarian efforts.

Matthew 25 House is part of The Parish Twinning Programs of America that couples a Catholic church from the U.S. or Canada with a church in Haiti to help provide much needed support.

Before the earthquake the House could accommodate up to 33 guests and had staff to provide meals for those staying as well as assisting guest’s needs for transportation, interpreters, currency exchange and other services related to their visit.

Since the earthquake the staff of Matthew 25 House has taken on new responsibilities.

In a lot adjacent to the property over 1,000 displaced Haitians have set up make shift homes using sheets and anything else that they can find. Many of the people are injured and all of the people are hungry. Matthew 25 House has turned into a refugee camp and medical center.

Volunteer medical staff has been doing everything from performing complicated surgeries like amputations to treatment of cuts and illnesses.
Other staff members have been providing meals to the Haitians that have taken up residence there due to the loss of their homes.

On Sunday, January 31, 2010, Cristian Santiago, Director of The Lighthouse School in Los Alcarrizos, Dominican Republic, and partner of Rays of Hope for Haiti, loaded a big truck with food and a second truck with bottled water. The money for the food came from donations made to Rays of Hope for Haiti. Cristian was able to bring more than he expected because of a donation for more food from Unto, Inc. Along with many, many pounds of food, 8000 bottles were filled with purified water from the system at the school that was created thanks to donations mainly from the West Michigan area.

Domo, from Matthew 25 House, accompanied by two Haitian policemen met Cristian and the trucks at the Dominican Republic – Haiti border to assure the safety and delivery of the food and water.
When the trucks arrived they were greeted with a lot of excitement. The staff had been on their knees the last few days praying for more food and water supplies. Since the Matthew 25 House has been providing food, shelter, medical help and water for over 1,000 people every day since the earthquake, supplies were running low.

At Rays of Hope for Haiti we are humbled that God would use us in such a way, as an answer to prayer. More will be needed and there are many other places to help. We are currently working on getting tents and tarps to take the place of sheets and linens at Matthew 25 House. We also are working on sending bedding and food supplies to Visitation Hospital where Haitians are recovering after being treated on USNS Comfort.

You can make a donation to Rays of Hope for Haiti with a credit card at our website under the tab “Giving” or with cash or a check at any Mercantile
Bank location or by mail to Rays of Hope for Haiti, 946 Burton SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49507.
